Johnny Brooks - 6' 2" - 172 lbs - Pro Record 2 wins - 1 draw
- 2 ko's - rated 162 in USA. |
From the desk of Brian J. Kennedy,
Not to be out done by his brother Marcus, who fights on HBO Pay Per
View August 12th, Johnny Brooks looks to step up his own game on
August 19th, when he fights for the CBA (Carolina's Boxing
Organization) Light Heavyweight Title. On the heals of an upsurge in
activity for South Carolina boxing, Johnny Brooks takes on fellow
prospect Thomas Brown at The Rock Hill National Guard Armory, in
Rock Hill, S.C. This gives Brown, with a 7-1-1 record, home
advantage considering he trains out of the nearby York Boxing
Academy.
The fight looks to be a competitive
one and should help determine the future for these two up and coming
fighters. The Puerto Rico raised Brooks is a better fighter than his
4-3-1 record would indicate and sparring sessions with top contender
Berry Butler have given him a renewed confidence as of late. Johnny
turned pro after gaining valuable experience in the amateurs going
20-5, while fighting the likes of Super Middleweight contender James
McGirt, son of former fighter turned trainer, James Buddy McGirt.
Under the guidance of trainer Jose Molina and with the help of Billy
Stanick's White Rock Gym both Marcus and Johnny Brooks have recently
gained wider exposure by fighting on ESPN and taking fights outside
of their comfort zone here in the Carolinas.
Fighters need to take tough fights
and this seems to be the approach in taking on an opponent like
Thomas Brown. In speaking with York Boxing Academy's Shane Benfield,
who happens to be one South Carolina's best fighters himself and
trains alongside Thomas Brown, this is a solid match-up that had to
be made. Thomas Brown is a quality fighter with a stellar amateur
background, in which he went 25-5 and reached the Top 5 in the
National Junior Olympics. With the Light Heavyweight division being
wide-open these days, there is plenty of incentive for these two
young boxers to make a name for themselves.
This professional boxing match is the final headliner of a two week
Toughman Contest, which begins on August 12th and finishes on August
19th. The first night of the Toughman Contest on August 12th will
feature undefeated professional Josh Green in
the Main Event! The fighting starts at 7:30pm both nights and
tickets are $20.00. For more information call Shane Benfield at
803-417-6681.
