(SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS) – The junior division stole the show in the
opening session of Thursday’s competition at the National PAL
Championships, which showcased quarterfinal action in the junior and
female divisions at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, Texas.
The 11 and 12-year-old division made its first appearance in San
Antonio with seven bouts in the junior competition. After the
youngest participants kicked off the day’s action, the intermediate
division (13-14-year-old) contestants stepped into the ring for 10
bouts of competition. Twenty-five senior JO division
(15-16-year-old) bouts closed the junior division action with all of
the victors moving on to Friday’s semifinal action.
Female open division action closed the afternoon session with 14
hotly-contested bouts in the quarterfinal round. Former national
champion Cynthia Moreno (Phoenix, Ariz.) pulled out a 13-12 decision
over 2010 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist
Tyrieshia Douglas (Baltimore, Md.) in their flyweight quarterfinal
showdown. Lightweight Stephanie Han (El Paso, Texas) enjoyed the
upset of the day, taking a 15-7 decision over 2009 National Champion
Patricia Manuel (Long Beach, Calif.) in afternoon action.
The men’s open division will take over the three rings in San
Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium on Thursday evening with 56 bouts
scheduled in three rings. All of the men’s weight classes will be
contested in the evening session, which will begin competition at 6
p.m. CST.
